Etymology:
Genus: Glyptemys - Giypt is Greek meaning "carved", emys is Greek meaning "turtle".
 Species: insculpta is derived from the Latin word insculptus which means "engraved". This refers to the engraved texture of the carapace.
Average Length: 5.5 - 8 in. (14 - 20 cm)

Record length: 9.2 in. (23.4 cm)
