Etymology:
Genus:	*Kinosternon* is derived from the Greek word kineo which means "move" and sternon which means "chest". This refers to the hinged plastron.
Species:	*subrubrum* is derived from the Latin word sub meaning "below" and ruber meaning "red". This refers to the reddish plastron color of hatchlings.
Subspecies:	*subrubrum* is derived from the Latin word sub meaning "below" and ruber meaning "red". This refers to the reddish plastron color of hatchlings.
