Most of the programs listed in The Snag and The Snag for Wee Ones require advance registration through our Registration Office. However, some programs do not require registration and a few require registration directly with the program site. Please see the individual program descriptions for instructions. There are THREE ways to register for programs that list a program number at the end of the program description:

  3. Walk-in. Registration Office located at 3700 S. Four Mile Run Dr., Arlington, VA 22206.

Family Programs
Big Wicked Pools
Sunday, Mar. 11, 1:00 - 3:00 PM
Adults and Older Children (10 & up) Call them big wicked puddles, disappearing ponds, or vernal pools, these usually temporary wetlands provide critical breeding habitat for wood frogs, spotted salamanders and other amphibians in our region. We'll learn about these little known habitats and the creatures that call them home through a lecture and an exploration of Long Branch's own vernal pool. Information: 703-228-6535. Peeper Prowl
Families with children ages 5 and up. Register children and adults; children must be accompanied by a registered adult. Hop on over and join the fun as we learn about and search for these tiny tree frogs and other amphibians. Information: 703-228-6535. Meet at Long Branch Nature Center, 625 S Carlin Springs Rd. Swamp Stomp

Join us on a nighttime search for the fascinating amphibians of Bull Run Regional Park. Find salamanders, spring peepers, wood frogs and more! Rubber boots and warm clothes highly recommended! Turtle Trot 5k
Saturday, May. 19, 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Families. Join us at the South Bluemont Park Shelter for The Inaugural Turtle Trot 5k supporting Long Branch Nature Center and local wildlife. Registration begins at 9:00 AM; race starts at 10:00 AM. The 5k course is certified by USA Track and Field and is chip timed. Be sure to also catch some “REAL” turtle races afterwards! Awards will be given for places. Funds raised will go to support local turtles by paying for the veterinary services for injured turtles, medications, animal care, and educational programming. For information: 703-228-6535.

Introduction to Local Amphibians: Lecture/Exhibition and Field Trip

SATURDAY, MARCH 24, 2PM – 4PM: (at Potomac Overlook Regional Park)
Join expert naturalists for an “up close and personal” look at amphibians in our region. We will explore local frogs, toads, and salamanders through a slideshow and with live specimens! Be prepared to learn calls, habits, and life cycles of these amazing animals. Potomac Overlook Regional Park is located at 2845 North Marcey Road, Arlington, VA 22207-5235. SATURDAY, APRIL 7, 7PM – 9PM (at BULL RUN REGIONAL PARK) FIELD TRIP/HIKE
Join us for the field trip portion of this program at Bull Run Regional Park in Centreville, VA. We will explore the parks many vernal pools and other aquatic habitats for breeding American toads, gray tree frogs, pickerel frogs, as well as egg masses from spotted salamanders. Bring rain boots, leg boots, or shoes that can get muddy. Dress for the weather!

SUNDAY, MARCH 25, 2PM: SNAKES OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA
Get a close-up look at a few of the Nature Center’s year-long residents… snakes! Discover the unique natural history and evolution of these legless animals and watch our snakes eat. Adults and children age 6 and older. Please call 703-528-5406 to make a reservation.

(At Bull Run Regional Park, Centreville, Virginia.)

The wood frogs are breeding in the vernal pools. Assist in collecting and releasing frogs and recording data for our amphibian survey. Wear water-proof boots and bring flash lights!
